www.sciencemag.org SCIENCE VOL 338 14 DECEMBER 2012 1389 COVER Arachnoscelis magnifi ca, a predaceous katydid (Orthoptera: Tettigoniidae), on a leaf in the San Lorenzo forest of Panama. This attractive insect is but one of the ~25,000 arthropod species likely to live in this 6000-hectare forest, confi rming the formidable diversity of arthropods, which appears to be 300 times that of mammals in tropical rainforests. See page 1481.

A big picture of a small brain

A detailed map of the neurons that carry information away from the mushroom bodies in the brains of fruit flies has improved our understanding of the ways in which experiences can modify behaviour.

‘Extimate’ Technologies: Empowerment, Intrusiveness, Surveillance: The fate of the human subject in the age of intimate technologies and Big Data

A new chapter in the history of technology seems to be unleashed. Until recently, man-made technologies basically functioned as prostheses, as external prosthetic extensions of human bodies, directed towards the outside world, allowing us to interact with and manipulate objects more effectively, eventually transforming humans into ‘prosthesis-gods’ (Freud 1930). Currently, technological devices...

Localization of MAP1-LC3 in vulnerable neurons and Lewy bodies in brains of patients with dementia with Lewy bodies.

There is emerging evidence implicating a role for the autophagy-lysosome pathway in the pathogenesis of Lewy body disease. We investigated potential neuropathologic and biochemical alterations of autophagy-lysosome pathway-related proteins in the brains of patients with dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), Alzheimer disease (AD), and control subjects using antibodies against Ras-related protein Rab...

Big-brained birds survive better in nature.

Big brains are hypothesized to enhance survival of animals by facilitating flexible cognitive responses that buffer individuals against environmental stresses. Although this theory receives partial support from the finding that brain size limits the capacity of animals to behaviourally respond to environmental challenges, the hypothesis that large brains are associated with reduced mortality ha...

ProSAAS-Derived Peptides Are Differentially Processed and Sorted in Mouse Brain and AtT-20 Cells

ProSAAS is the precursor for some of the most abundant peptides found in mouse brain and other tissues, including peptides named SAAS, PEN, and LEN. Both SAAS and LEN are found in big and little forms due to differential processing. Initial processing of proSAAS is mediated by furin (and/or furin-like enzymes) and carboxypeptidase D, while the smaller forms are generated by secretory granule pr...
